McGilvray Family Geneology
John Loughney has provided a detailed review of the family line of John McGilvray, born 1781.
This is the descendants list of John McGilvray. As near as I can tell, John was born in Scotland (according to the 1841 PEI Census), and born probably around 1781. He was most likely in one of the McGilvray families that traveled on the Jane to St Johns Island (Prince Edward Island) in 1790. John bought 100 acres near Clear Stream / St Margarets in 1805. John married Catherine McEachern before 1810 – she was the daughter of one of the McEachern farmers that lived on either side of John. John & Catherine had the following children: Allan, Alexander, John, Angus, Catherine and maybe others. Their son John is my 2nd great grandfather. He was a ship carpenter and traveled back and forth to Boston, where he married Bridget Delany from Ireland. John and Bridget had 3 sons in Boston – John, Alexander, William (my second great grandfather) – before returning to Prince Edward Island, where they had Mary Ann, Joseph Angus and Sarah Catherine. William married Agnes McKinnon of lot 43, had one child in Boston – Henrietta - and one child in PEI – John Alexander (my grandfather and who I am named after). The family moved to the US, first to Port Richmond, Staten Island and then to Bayonne.
I have quite many pictures of the McGillvrays and McKinnons from the 1800s and early 1900s, both in PEI and also in NY / NJ. Not all of them have names attached to them, so I am always looking for possible connections to share information with.
