Laughlin MacDonald Family Notes
- from Jean MacDonald Selines (contact information can be found at bottom)
Below is a list of my MacDonald family members buried in St. Margaret’s Pioneer Cemetery. This line of MacDonald’s is often referred to as the Dan Joe, Mick’s. The complete handle is Dan Joe, Mick, Donald, Lauchlin.
This line is my father’s paternal line of MacDonalds. Their home is the abandoned house on Johnson’s Lane on the right hand side going towards the ocean. My ancestor (great great great grandfather) Lauchlin MacDonald is considered to be one of the earliest settlers of this area. He is also referred to in his daughter Nancy Hayes’s obituary (she is sometimes called Anne). Nancy and her husband are buried in the cemetery at St. Alexis.
Lauchlin MacDonald - born in South Uist, Scotland – year unknown
He died in Clear Springs in 1812. We are positive of the year, place of birth, place of death and burial in the Pioneer Cemetery because it was documented in a court case on file in the Provincial Courthouse in Charlottetown. I have all of this documentation.
Nancy (McIntyre) MacDonald (sometimes called Anne), wife of Laughlin MacDonald - born in South Uist, Scotland – year unknown.
Died in Clear Springs circa 1848 and buried in the St. Margaret’s Pioneer Cemetery.
Daniel MacDonald - born in Clear Springs circa 1800.
He died in 1833 and was buried in the St. Margaret’s Pioneer Cemetery. He was the son of Lauchlin and Nancy MacDonald. This death is documented in the article “Tales From a Ledger” printed in the Island Magazine.
L. Donald MacDonald, son of Laughlin and Nancy (McIntyre) MacDonald, born in Clear Springs in 1806
Died in Clear Springs in 1893 and buried in the St. Margaret’s Cemetery
Mary (McVarish) MacDonald, wife of L. Donald MacDonald, born in 1814 and was the daughter of John McVarish and Margaret Corbett.
She died in Clear Springs in 1894 and was buried in St. Margaret’s Pioneer Cemetary. I am not positive but she may have been born in the St. Peter’s area.
Charlie Lamont, young son of Catherine “Carrie” Pulcharia MacDonald and her husband James Lamont, grandson of Lauchlin and Nancy MacDonald of Clear Springs.
Charlie was born in Clear Springs. This is documented in a letter in the possession of my cousin in California. Charlie died in Clear Springs at the family home on Johnson’s Lane. Carrie later moved to Colorado and then to California. Her descendants live in California. Carrie was the daughter of Lauchlin and Nancy MacDonald.

Below I have listed some burials in my father’s maternal line of MacDonalds. My father is a double MacDonald. This line is often referred to as the Neil Jeromes. This home is also still standing and is owned by my sister, AnnMarie O’Shea. It is in Hermanville and the mailbox erected each summer has the name O’Shea on written on it.
A headstone in the cemetery reads:
John MacDonald
Died 3/20/1872
Aet 54
Also his son James Joseph
Died Nov. 20, 1881
Aet 18
There is also a Teresa MacDonald buried nearby who is John and Sarah’s daughter.
John’s wife, Sarah McPhee also is buried in the cemetery circa 1892. She was born in PEI in 1833. John’s parents are also buried in St. Margaret’s Pioneer Cemetery. This is documented in an early will. Their names are John and Sarah (MacEachern) MacDonald. Both died prior to 1850. John and Sarah’s son and daughter in law are buried in the newer St. Margaret’s cemetery. Their headstone reads Neil Jerome and Sarah MacDonald.
